ProGrad assist with the Nestle Assessment Day

by Berleena

Last week, ProGrad were proud to work alongside Nestle with the selection of the Graduate intake for 2010.

Nestle had invited a strong selection of 40 candidates from across the country to battle it out at the Nestle Assessment Day, held in Sydney.  With only a few Graduate positons up for grabs, it truly was an intense afternoon.

Nestle offer a wonderful career opportunity for any recent University graduate looking to embark on their professional sales or marketing career.  This two year rotational program is designed to produce some excellent talent for the business and generate the future business leaders.

Nestle opened the assessment day with a panel of key executives who presented to the graduates.  They outlined their own history within the company and explained some of the benefits of joining an organisation like Nestle.

Once this had been positioned, we then led into a self introduction session which was then followed by group dynamic exercises.  Each group completed two intense exercises within a limited time frame, and then provided feedback to the facilitator about how they reached their answers.

Nestle had put togther a challenging, yet insightful case study which each group had to complete. This was made more challenging by the panel presentations which took place in tandem.

All in all, the afternoon was challenging and 12 graduates have consquently made it to the final selection of their graduate intake.  It was a great afternoon and we’re grateful to all graduates who attended.

Working with organisations to develop their graduate asessment tool has become a regular offering for ProGrad and one that we genuinely enjoy conducting.  If you’d like to discuss the offering in more detail, please contact one of the ProGrad team on 02 8235 8300

What are graduates looking for?

by Berleena

ProGrad are always looking to understand the key drivers/ motivators around graduates accepting jobs…so what exactly are they looking for?  Is it all about the money?  I think thats pretty unlikely…there seem to be more factors that surround a choice of career.  Some of the key themes that we seem to hear about time and time again are:

1) Culture of a company

2) Progression Opporutnities

3) Opportunities to gain exposure within the business

4) Travel opportunities

5) Training/ Investment of the employer

Is there anything else that graduates are looking for?  We’d love to hear your feedback.

Giving Constructive Feedback

by Berleena

At a graduate level, with limited interview experience, feedback is absolutely crucial to better understand what employers are looking for.  Not enough candidates ask for it, for fear of hearing something they might not like.  Take out of feedback what YOU feel is relevant.  Regardless, its all worth hearing and might help to improve your techniques for future interviews.

ProGrad offer feedback at several points to our candidates:

1) Following a ProGrad Assessment Day: Whilst it can be very detailed feedback, it is always worth asking for.  We will be happy to discuss the exercises completed, and make recommendations for future assessment sessions which might be of value to you.

2) Following interviews: This will be slightly more difficult as it is dependant on the feedback we’re given from employers.  That said, we always encourage total honesty from our clients.  Whether the interview was good, bad or ugly – we like to know about it.  We are happy to provide this feedback also on request

3) Once employment/ training as commenced: ProGrad are happy to provide this feedback also upon request, and we recommend getting proactive with it.  Ask your boss directly for feedback about your first week and month.  How did you perform?  What else would they like to see from you?  How else can you improve?

Giving honest feedback will always be tricky, as it is human nature to not want to offend someone.  That said, it is the only way we can learn during the interview process and we need to be ready to take some comments which we might not necessarily agree with.  Regardless, the experience will have helped you grow and develop in some way, the feedback is simply the icing on the cake.
