Sales and Marketing…a department, not an industry!

by Berleena

ProGrad are an assessment, placement and training company, which specialise in working with recent University graduates and placing them into corporate careers upon leaving University.

Our core activity is working within the business to business sales and marketing departments within organisations.  At ProGrad, we receive over 500 applications each week from recent University graduates looking to kick start their careers within B2B sales roles across Australia.

We work across several industries such as FMCG, IT, Media, Events, Finance and Pharmaceuticals.  Regardless of the industry…the roles are all quite similar however.  They’re all in what we define as “business to business sales”.

Every business requires “sales” in order to generate revenue.  It is this revenue which ensures that the company makes money – simple.  It is one of the most crucial elements of ANY company.

When graduates are thinking about their careers, and weighing up their options we always recommend that they identify the DEPARTMENT they would like to work in first of all.  There are many departments to a company.  There is an admin department, a finance department, a human resource department, a sales and marketing department etc.

Once a candidate has established the department, THEN its time to look into them.  Don’t be too defined about which industry you would like, as you really want to ensure that doors are opened, not closed.

One of the primary frustrations we experience at ProGrad is when we speak to graduates and ask a very crucial question:

“What type of role are you looking to get into?”

Imagine the frustration when we hear “Media/ Advertising/ PR”.  These aren’t roles…these are different vertical markets (or industries).  Within a media company alone, there are many many different types of positions available.

As a graduate though, where can you add the most value?  Well, at ProGrad we work specifically within the B2B sales teams for a reason.  This is where a graduate can add immediate value to an organisation, and be exposed to many different aspects of a commercial organisation.  It provides a wonderful environment to learn, develop and train.  In any company, within any industry, there will be a requirement for someone to be responsible for developing and maintaining corporate relationships.  This is exactly the type of role covered by a ProGrad graduate.

ProGrad screen over 500 candidates on a weekly basis, and run a weekly assessment day in order to select the highest achieving graduates.  If you would like to be considered for one of our ProGrad positions, please contact one of the Graduate Management team on 02 8235 8300.  We would welcome applications from all recent University graduates.  For any more information about ProGrad, please feel free to look at our website also at www.prograd.com.au

After a recent Sydney ProGrad Assessment day took place, I was delighted to receive an email from a graduate that attended.

 “Hi Sophie,
Just wanted to say a very, very big thank you for all your help and advice for ProGrad’s Assessment day. Without you I know that I would not have made it through, which I am so, so pleased about. So thank you once again for all your feedback and advice.
I was also just wondering if it was possible for you to e-mail me the notes on Davinia’s presentation that she gave at the end of the day, I missed part of it so would be great to look over them so I can prepare myself for any upcoming interviews.
Once again, thanks for everything.
Lauren”

ProGrad Team is Running in Sydneys City to Surf!

by Berleena

Is it important to socialize outside working hours? We think so! The ProGrad team strongly recognizes the importance of socialising outside of working hours, whether it be joining a sporting team or going out for a group dinner.

A few months ago the ProGrad team spent a Friday night down at King Street Wharf Ten Pin Bowling. Although some were notably better bowlers than others, we all had a great night and it provided us some time to bond as a team and have some fun outside of working hours.

Last month the girls at ProGrad all got together and organized a girls night out with dinner at a local pizza restaurant. It was a great night which gave us the chance of bond as a team and relax after a big week at work.

This weekend over half of the ProGrad team will be joining 75,000 other Sydney-siders to run in the famous Sun Herald City to Surf. With little training we are still unsure of how well we will go, however we are all excited to get outside and enjoy a fun Sunday together as a team.

ProGrad is an assessment, placement and training centre for recent university graduates looking to start their corporate career. If you would like to know more about our services, please call the ProGrad Sydney office and speak to anyone in the ProGrad Management team on 02 8235 8300 or visit the ProGrad webpage at www.prograd.com.au

A Major Frustration for Employers

by Berleena

At ProGrad, we specialise in placing graduates into their corporate career.  For many, this is often their first “proper” job in a corporate arena and can be a learning experience for both the candidate, and the employer.

Occassionally, we meet with companies who have taken on graduates and found some common challenges.  A lack of generic work experience can cause a few challenges:

1) Lack of awareness of corporate etiquette

2) How to treat others in a corporate context (superiors, peers, colleagues)

3) Managing time effectively

4) LISTENING!

5) Wanting to “run” before being able to walk.

For many organisations, this is often the first time they have taken a candidate at a junior level.  Candidates with limited commercial experience can be a wonderful asset to companies, yet can also come with challenges.  All work experience is greatly valued, particularly within an office environment.  Understanding how to behave in a commercial environment is the first step, don’t under estimate the basics in corporate behaviour.

In the current economic downturn, employers are looking for candidates who can easily be moulded, and can add immediate value with limited training time.  If you’re a recent University graduate looking to kick start your corporate career, our recommendation is to ensure you have some level of corporate/ office experience.  This can be gained in a variety of ways, but is highly regarded and will teach some key skills.

If you’d like to speak to ProGrad about this, please contact our graduate management team on 02 8235 8300.

Major Firms Cutting Graduate Intakes

by Berleena

In the last few months, professional service firms and investment banks have seen one of the biggest cut backs in graduate recruitment seeing within the last decade.  The largest cuts have been seen within the accounting and consulting firms, which historically have always soaked up hundreds of graduates each year.  Many of them have cut their intakes by 50%.

Deloitte will cut their graduate intake by as much as 30% to 350 per year, and Ernst and Young will reduce their intake from 425 to 350.

The good news is that the intakes for 2010 will likely be the low point.  Most organisations are already planning for the 2011 intake which should have a more positive outlook.

Students face an uncertain time over forthcoming months, with many worried studwnra considering an extension of their studies.  The best recommendation at this point is to open as many doors as possible, all work experience is highly valued, particularly in this competitive arena.

ProGrad is a graduate recruitment company, specialising in assessing, placing and training recent University graduates.  If you would like to know more about our organisation, please contact us on 02 8235 8300.
